Water damage affects 1 in 50 insured homes every year according to the Insurance Information Institute. That number may be higher than you previously thought. How do so many homes get affected by water damage every year?

Below we highlight common causes of water damage:

Leaks and Burst Pipes

Most of us have water pumped into our homes every day through our plumbing. When something goes wrong with your water or sewer lines, it can easily cause water damage.

One important thing to recognize is that water damage can happen from even the slowest leaks. It’s obvious that a burst pipe in your restroom can cause extensive damage, but even a slowly accruing slab leak can cause damage over months without being noticed.

Hot Water Tanks

The typical hot water tank stores 50 to 70 gallons worth of water. In the event of a failure, water can easily leak and cause damage. The best way to avoid this is through preventative maintenance! Be aware of the ways you are using water in your home and check on your systems over time because they will deteriorate eventually.

Weather

Water can invade your home from extreme weather events as well. From heavy rains to hurricanes, your home can easily flood from severe weather. Your basement is the most susceptible area of the home to flooding. Installing a sump pump is a good way to protect your basement from flooding due to excess groundwater brought on by heavy rains.

Gutters

A clogged gutter can lead to water leaks inside your home. This is common in areas where there are lots of rainy weather. The water flows to the inside and damages the wood.

Water damage is most often caused by things entirely out of your control. This is why homeowner’s insurance exists. Still, there are some ways you can prevent or monitor your plumbing systems to catch leaks before they damage your home.
